Losing Season? Mike Tomlin Gets Brutal Reality Check from Analyst After Much-Hyped Aaron Rodgers’ Move to Steelers
Chris Broussard believes Aaron Rodgers will hand Mike Tomlin his first losing season.

In March, Chris Broussard cautioned the Pittsburgh Steelers against signing Aaron Rodgers. Broussard argued that Mike Tomlin will sign off on his first losing season as the Steelers’ head coach if Rodgers were their quarterback.
Art Rooney and Omar Khan didn’t heed Broussard’s warnings and gave Rodgers a one-year contract worth $13.65 million, which includes $10 million guaranteed and can be worth up to $19.5 million with incentives.
If you got Pittsburgh and Mike Tomlin has his first losing season, that’s a bad look.
Chris Broussard had said
Despite the new development, Broussard remains rooted in his argument. In fact, he firmly believes Tomlin risks losing his unblemished record.
This is going to be the first losing season of Mike Tomlin’s career.
Chris Broussard said during the June 7 episode of FS1’s First Things First
However, Brossard agreed to give Rodgers and the Steelers the benefit of the doubt. He predicted the Steelers would start 3-3—with three losses in their division because they will face Joe Burrow’s Bengals and Lamar Jackson’s Ravens.
I’ve still got three division losses … So even if I say they start 3-0, go .500 in the division, they’re still 8-9…. I just think it’s going to be a failure.
Broussard added
He further highlighted that Rodgers doesn’t have a strong playoff record lately. Rodgers last won a postseason game for the Green Bay Packers in 2021. He is 14-21 over the past three years, having missed the 2023 season due to a torn Achilles.
Tomlin’s record isn’t anything to write home about. The veteran coach has indeed led the Steelers to the playoffs in his tenure, but they last won a game in the postseason in 2016.
They were on the verge of missing out last year after losing the final four games of the regular season. The Ravens finally put them out of their misery in the wild-card round.
Aaron Rodgers was not the Steelers’ first choice
When the Steelers zoned in on Rodgers after the Jets cut him earlier this year, it’s easy to mistake that he was the only quarterback Khan and Tomlin looked at. The 41-year-old was actually the third choice behind Justin Fields and Matthew Stafford.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed via Sports Illustrated,
[Steelers] were in on Matthew Stafford and couldn’t get done a trade. They tried to re-sign Justin Fields. He opted to go to the New York Jets.
Fields rejected the chance to lead the Steelers long-term and signed for, ironically, the Jets. The 37-year-old Stafford, meanwhile, wanted a pay raise in California, which the Rams brass seemed unwilling to entertain. Eventually, the Rams caved and restructured his contract, which will net him $80 million in new money over the next two seasons alongside a $4 million roster bonus, paid in March.
Rodgers became the Steelers’ quarterback because he was the best player available after the first two players turned down the advances.
This was the best move that the Pittsburgh Steelers could make right now.

Incidentally, the Steelers kick off their 2025 NFL campaign against Fields and the Jets in New York. They will also welcome Rodgers’ first club, the Packers, to Pittsburgh in week 8. If Rodgers defeats the Packers, then he will become only the fifth quarterback after Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Drew Brees to record a win against all 32 NFL teams.
