The Pittsburgh Steelers sailed to their fifth win of the season, even after deciding to bench their winning quarterback, Justin Fields, in favor of Russell Wilson. Wilson, playing his first game of the season following a preseason injury, stepped in and led the team to victory.
There was intense debate over the Pittsburgh Steelers decision to bench a quarterback who was leading 4-2. A lot was riding on the backs on Russell Wilson and head coach Mike Tomlin, heading into the Sunday game against the New York Jets. The Green and White, bolstered by the addition of Davante Adams, presented a hard foe for the Steelers.
The Steelers braved their opponent and came from the behind to score 31 unanswered points despite not starting well. Mike Tomlin’s decision against popular opinion came through as Wilson threw 16 for 29 for 296 yards and two touchdowns. In the post-game media availability, Tomlin fielded a question from Brandon Marshall whether the switch was one of his boldest decisions ever.
In response, Tomlin had a unique and savage walk-off response. It was one of those comments that eliminates any doubts and cements itself as quite the mic drop.

Mike Tomlin, who started as the head coach in 2007, has been praised for his consistent results. In his 17 years, Tomlin has ensured the Steelers remain on or above .500 in all of those years. The recent Wilson decision being right proves Tomlin’s capability and slaps in the face of all those who doubted his decision-making ability.
Russell Wilson shines in Pittsburgh Steelers debut
Russell Wilson didn’t take long time to start working his magic. Wilson’s 264 yards set a new record for the most passing yards by a Steelers quarterback in their debut. The team posted their highest point total in a game since Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement.
Wilson steered through the initial boos to cruise his team to their fifth victory. Speaking on his mentality, he referenced the words of his late metal conditioning coach Trevor Moawad.
Mike Tomlin assessed Wilson to be excellent. The 52-year-old Super Bowl winning coach acknowledged that Wilson got better with time. He further finished off stating that once Wilson got into the playing field, knocked the rust off and carried Pittsburgh to a win. The Steelers play a struggling New York Giants in the next week.
