Narrative is ever-changing, and Mike Tomlin made that extremely clear after a resounding win over divisional rivals, the Baltimore Ravens. Throughout last week, leading up to the Ravens game, analysts speculated that the Pittsburgh Steelers are slowly heading toward parting ways with Tomlin.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter provided a telling update on Tomlin’s future with the AFC North franchise. The longtime insider claimed that there have been talks regarding Tomlin among the Steelers hierarchy. He won’t be fired, that’s a given, however, he only has two more years remaining in his contract.

According to league sources, the Steelers must decide whether to pick up the option on Tomlin’s contract by March 1. There will be organizational meetings and decisions that occur, but not until after this season, with a full body of work for all appropriate parties to review, sources said.

Adam Schefter wrote in his recent article

Two-time Super Bowl winner and former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger advised Tomlin to drop down one level and take the vacant Penn State football job. His players stood by in his time of need. All-Pro defensive tackle Cam Heyward brushed aside all the negative talk and directed his attention to winning the remaining games.

It began with a 27-22 victory against the Ravens in Baltimore. The win improved the Steelers’ record to 7-6 and Tomlin’s record against Ravens head coach John Harbaugh to 22-17.

Mike Tomlin and the Steelers hold their destiny in their own hands

The Steelers haven’t made a deep playoff run in years. Under Tomlin, they always seem to find a way into the postseason, only to get bounced right away. 2024 was no different, after just scraping into January football, they fell to the Ravens in the wildcard round.

Tomlin made major changes in the offseason, bringing in four-time league MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf, All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, and several other key additions on both offense and defense. They experienced ups and downs in form along the way, but have done enough to be above .500.

Tomlin needs the 2025 season to work for him. His playoff drought is among the longest in the league. The Steelers last won a postseason game in 2016, an unthinkable record for a club that boasts six Super Bowl victories.

Sunday’s win will provide them with a platform to win the remaining games. But more importantly, it will keep the media mum on discussing Tomlin’s departure.

We knew not to pay attention to any outside noise… Coach T is a great leader for us, and he’s done nothing but take the bullets for us.

DK Metcalf told Brooke Pryor of ESPN

Metcalf’s 148 yards on 7 receptions from 12 targets in Baltimore was the best of his Steelers career. Rodgers played with a massive wrap in his banged-up left arm, but still put up 23 completions from 34 pass attempts for 284 yards, 1 passing touchdown, and 1 rushing touchdown.

Alex Highsmith and Brandin Echoles grabbed a couple of sacks while James Pierre snagged an interception from Ravens QB Lamar Jackson.

The Steelers had fewer touches on the ball, first downs, overall yards, and conceded more penalties compared to the Ravens. However, they effectively dictated the game until the end.

Up next, the Steelers welcome the 6-7 Miami Dolphins at Acrisure Stadium in Week 15. The Steelers lead the series 15-14, but have lost the last two games against the AFC East franchise.
