Mike Tomlin and his Pittsburgh Steelers were aware of Shedeur Sanders‘ growth and how the Cleveland Browns were improving with every passing week. They probably did not realize until late in the game that their division rivals had become good enough to defeat them in their Week 17 clash at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

Even though they knew that their offense was going to struggle a bit with DK Metcalf‘s suspension, they did not envision that Aaron Rodgers and his unit would find it difficult to get a touchdown registered in their name.

Instead, it was Shedeur Sanders, the rookie fifth-rounder, who got the best of the Steelers’ defense and helped his team get the lead they would hold on to for the rest of the game.

It does not matter. He’s not a Pittsburgh Steeler. He plays for the Cleveland Browns, I’ll let them talk about his evaluations.

Mike Tomlin told reporters

It appears the Steelers’ head coach showed no interest in discussing the Browns’ quarterback. Probably, he was angry at the fact that his team is now facing a do-or-die situation to win the AFC North next week.

Maybe he would have answered that question had his team not faced such a trying time against that vaunted home team defense. Or, he possibly knew that anything he said could be taken out of context, especially with the media coverage on the rookie signal caller.

Aaron Rodgers and Mike Tomlin had words of encouragement for Shedeur Sanders after the game

Mike Tomlin may not have wanted to dissect Shedeur Sanders’ development over the past six weeks, but he did meet the Browns QB in the middle of the field after the game.

Young man, stay up.

Mike Tomlin told Shedeur Sanders

That was enough of some words of encouragement for a smile to break out on the rookie’s face. This was right after Aaron Rodgers also gave him a good pep talk.

Good job, man. I’m rooting for you, proud of you, happy for you.

Aaron Rodgers said

The four-time league MVP was already full of praise for the Colorado Buffaloes star even before the game, as he felt Sanders had progressed well despite all the pressure that is on his shoulders.

Now, to see him play well enough to earn his second victory, that too against a playoff team, was impressive enough for both the Steelers’ top personnel to give the young signal caller words of encouragement.

Dan Orlovsky wants some consistency from Shedeur Sanders

As many critics are still getting to grips with how Shedeur Sanders has seemingly not made a joke out of himself so far, Dan Orlovsky and his crew of NFL Live were discussing the Browns’ QB’s performance against the Steelers.

I think for Cleveland, what Shedeur do you get? In the first half, I thought he made some really good throws… But then there was the inconsistency in the second half, and then some of the reverting to old habits. He’s so young.

Dan Orlovsky said

The former quarterback went on to question whether the Cleveland Browns continue to place their trust in their starting signal caller or go with Deshaun Watson next season.

He believes some consistency could help Sanders. But for that, he needs more reps with Kevin Stefanski handling play-calling duties, and some more time practicing with the first team.

With the head coaching position also a question mark even before the season is over, Orlovsky is not sure which direction the franchise will take. The analyst believes the Browns now have a developing talent at their disposal, along with a veteran who has not lived up to his hype.
