Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout was forced to end his 2024 season early due to 2nd meniscus surgery. The player himself released a statement on social media saying he’s sorry to upset the fans, and that he’ll try to come back to the lineup as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, Trout has been going through an injury-ridden season after playing for only 29 games. He’s been limited to 266 games out of 648 in the past four years due to multiple injuries. MLB analyst Jon Heyman said, Trout’s injury “it’s bad for everyone.”

Apart from Trout now being in longtime IL, Anthony Rendon is also placed on the injured list due to back pain issues. Additionally, the team lost Shohei Ohtani earlier in the year in a trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers. They’ll really have to come up with a strategic lineup if they wish to compete in the playoffs.

Mike Trout himself said that he was heartbroken, frustrated, and disappointed to deliver such news to the fans. The Angels are now hoping to have him back for spring training in 2025.

Since my initial surgery on May 3rd to repair my meniscus, my rehabilitation proved longer and more difficult than anticipated…Playing and competing is a huge part of my life. This is equally as heartbreaking and frustrating for me as it is for you, the fans.

He said he was “devasted” when the doctor announced the grim news. Despite receiving a clear MRI on July 25, and even undergoing painful rehabilitation, a second tear was found recently in the meniscus “ending my hopes of returning this season.”

The Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington said “we’re gonna miss him” and he is looking forward to getting their star player back on the lineup next year. GM Perry Minasian talked about how “devasted” both he was Mike Trout were when the news broke to him in the hospital room.

Minasian said there is no one who wishes to play more than he does. He hopes Trout can get back to his 100% next season and score 70 HRs, winning the MVP award of the year.

He’s devastated. I was too. I’m not the emotional type but being in the room and hearing the news with him was tough.

On Thursday, his teammate Logan O’Hoppe expressed that the news “makes us all speechless.” “He’s as pissed off” as anybody else, he said. Despite taking full care of his health and rehab, he still had to undergo a second surgery and it must have taken a toll both on his body and mind. “The guy can’t catch a break,” O’Hoppe added.
