It’s on like it was never gone. Mike Tyson had quite the health jumpscare recently that almost put him out of his matchup. A sudden ulcer flare-up postponed their fight from July 20 ‘Iron Mike’ faces piercing influencer pugilist Jake Paul next. Now, Tyson remains committed to his November 15 dance date against Jake Paul. If there was any doubt, their latest presser is proof enough.
Mike Tyson appeared with ‘The Problem Child’ on Sunday in New York City for the first press conference ahead of their rescheduling.. That withdrawal only inflamed the somewhat gimmicky build-up to it, where Paul dissed him for the delay. Afterward, a playful Tyson kept shoving him and laughing, expecting a high-octane fallout at their staredown. Paul got a shove of his in as well, but Tyson was unfazed.
Paul last faced Mike Perry in an eight-round cruiserweight battle for DAZN. Tyson and Paul meet each other in a pro heavyweight bout contested across eight two-minute rounds at AT&T Stadium. Perhaps nothing highlights the age difference between Tyson, 58, and Paul, 27, more than his regressing health. Many have expressed concerns.
This match is an adrenaline pump for Tyson, who requested the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations to officially have it as a pro-sanction. Tyson hasn’t fought pro since Kevin McBride. His last appearance in the ring was an eight-round exhibition against fellow Hall of Famer Roy Jones Jr. He’s out to prove he has still got it.
‘Anti-hero’ Jake Paul shrugs off Mike Tyson, critics in latest presser
When the consensus heavyweight boxing icon gets it going, he is beastly. Mike Tyson has been out of a pro game since 2005. His 2020 bout ended in a split draw, but people still see shades of that unhinged boxer in him. Ahead of the new matchup, the former champ, truly excited, tried egging the opponent on in their first rescheduled presser staredowns.
Many feared Tyson would revert to his old shades if Paul lashed back. However, ‘Problem Child’ was less than so problematic. Jake Paul is 10-1 as a professional boxer since debuting in 2020. While he often catches flak for maintaining his line of victory against washouts, Paul has proved more capable than most in the science behind the “sweet sciences.” Hence, Paul referred to the case of Muhammad Ali to describe himself as an Anti-hero.
People are always going to have something to say, …it’s because of who I am, it’s because I proved everyone wrong. Reminder, the most hated and most criticized boxer in the sport of boxing, before they loved him, was Muhammad Ali. So I’m the antihero and people will love me soon enough, once they realize what I’ve done for this sport…You’ve got to risk it for the biscuit.Jake Paul at the Tyson vs. Paul press conference during Fanatics Fest; H/T: SBNation Network
Paul and his next nemesis met during Fanatics Fest at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. While Tyson switched between his playful glee and friendly shove, excited to return to boxing, Paul was eagle-eyed.
As with most of his boxing career, Paul continues to deflect criticism of his matchmaking preferences. This time booking Tyson. He shrugs off criticism by highlighting what it means to fight the “Mike Tyson” in a sporting event and how he makes it possible. As such, his efforts and the matchup itself could be one for history.
