Boxing legend and heavyweight icon Mike Tyson has lost, but remains proud for going the distance. Who else could have gone the distance at that age? Not many athletes can. Partly, he overcame a medical problem before the bout. The extent of the problem was only so slightly public before the fight. “Iron Mike” faced Jake Paul and gave it the best he could at 58.

Jake Paul vs. Tyson headlined Netflix-theme boxing bout from the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium. ‘Problem Child’ swiped him via unanimous decision, with a lopsided scorecards. The bout, originally for July, came to be when Mike Tyson had a cross-country ulcer flare-up. In his first social media statement after Friday’s defeat, Tyson said he “almost died” and “lost blood” during a medical episode.

This is one of those situations when you lost but still won. I’m grateful for last night. No regrets to get in ring one last time. I almost died in June. Had 8 blood transfusions. Lost half my blood and 25lbs in hospital and had to fight to get healthy to fight so I won. To have my children see me stand toe to toe and finish 8 rounds with a talented fighter half my age in front of a packed Dallas Cowboy stadium is an experience that no man has the right to ask for. Thank you.

It’s presumed the medical episode is the ulcer or its aftermath. Tyson spoke about the incident in various interviews, giving graphic details (such as defecating a tar-like substance). But never did he mention the seriousness using this vernacular. It’s because of these optics and the disparity at 58 that Paul vs. Tyson caught a whole lot of flak early on.

The Netflix foray into the first combat sporting event, and Tyson’s return so many years later was one hell of an affair. Thanks to pro cutman Jacob “Stitch” Duran in his corner, and media availability personnel, his locker itself at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington got a tribute. Given his age, Tyson has no regrets to do what he did. Given the legend he is and always will be there’s always an active interest in Tyson.

Why did Mike Tyson bite his gloves all the time during the Jake Paul fight?

On several occasions during his fight with Jake Paul on Friday night, Mike Tyson kept biting into his own gloves. It’s not something one sees everyday no matter how out-of-pocket said fight is. Well – better gloves than ears of Jake! But it did open up another line of interest into the icon returning.

On Netflix, ringside commentators Mauro Ranallo, Roy Jones Jr. and Rosie Perez couldn’t stop talking about it. In particular, Jones, who has been on the other end to “Iron”, couldn’t stop pointing out that Tyson did it every time and wondered if he had a problem with his mouthpiece.

Ranallo’s response to Jones was that biting into his own gloves had been a feature of Tyson’s career throughout. So, what reallt was it? Tyson pitched in details when asked by Ariel Helwani after the fight.

I have a habit of biting my gloves in my fights, yeah,… Yea. I have a biting fixation…I’m absolutely happy, yes, … I didn’t prove nothing to anybody, only to myself.

Tyson lasted eight, 2-minute rounds with Paul at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium, with an easy decision for Jake Paul. But even at 58, Mike Tyson proved he has the speed and technical acumen to stand up to most. If not for the gas tank at this age, his fuel and ferocity could have seen a Tyson of the old. This might also not be the last time one sees him in the ring.
