Mikel Arteta calls on Arsenal to show ‘big balls’ and issues apology to fans after 3-0 defeat against Liverpool

Liverpool vs Arsenal

Liverpool thrashed Arsenal 3-0 in the Premier league match, one in which Mikel Arteta’s side failed to even compete with the defending Premier league champions. Liverpool dominated the game from the first minute and could have scored more goals if not for their poor finishing.

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta was in ‘shock‘ after the lacklustre performance and called on his side to show ‘big balls’ in their next match against Slavia Prague the in Europa League. The result dashed Arsenal’s hopes of a late charge to make it into the Champions league spots. Earlier Manchester City’s win over Leicester mathematically ended Liverpool’s hopes of retaining the Premier League.

Arteta described this performance as one of the worst under his tenure at the club

This was Mikel Arteta’s 50th Premier League fixture in charge of Arsenal and before the game he called for the Gunners to take the game to Liverpool, having won the corresponding fixture last year with a mixture of guile, guts and luck.

“We completely deserved to lose the game. They were better in every department and deserved to win the game with the margin they had, or even more,” Arteta said.

“I accept responsibility for the way we played today. It is my fault. I have to set the team up to perform in a different way and that is it. At the moment I am in shock.

“It is a challenge and brings an opportunity,” he said. “If you have courage and big balls and you represent a club like this, you have to stand up in the next game and take it.”

“I don’t know if it was the worst but probably one of the worst,” Arteta said of the performance.

“We gave every ball away we could not put three passes together. There were too many simple things not done right. The basics weren’t there today.

“We want to apologise, to our people and our fans. This is nowhere near what we want and we have to do better.”
