Milos Raonic has been sidelined for most of the season due to injury. Despite returning in January, the 33-year-old didn’t play convincingly, but in his comeback this grass season the Canadian has been striking hard. Yesterday, he set the record for most aces in a three-set ATP match.
The former World No.3 struck 47 aces to beat Brit Cameron Norrie 6-7(6), 6-3, 7-6(9) at the Queen’s Championship. Though Norrie played a very good game over his Nottingham shock loss last week, Raonic’s serves were too quick for him. However, this is not the first time Raonic has shown how great he can serve.
The Canadian beat his previous record which he held at the 2011 Memphis Open against Radek Stepanek, in which he hit 38 aces in a three-set match. Ivo Karlovic was the player with the most aces in a three-set match, and hit 45 aces at the 2015 Halle Open against Tomas Berdych, winning 86 percent of his first serve.
However, for Raonic, a great serve is one important component of his game. He has grown to get used to it, especially on grass. It helped him finish as runners-up in the Wimbledon final in 2016 and last week he reached the quarterfinals of the Libema Open despite being away for more than two months.
But my serve has always been the most important shot to me. This small record, it's something special, something meaningful. I’m glad that behind that also stands a win because maybe I'd feel differently or maybe a bit more sour if I was to get that many free points and lose the match.Milos Raonic said after the victory via ATP
Besides Raonic great serve, the Canadian has found it difficult to play consecutively every season. Since 2016, he has suffered hip, feet and even wrist injuries, in addition to having torn his Achilles and broken a toe. Now at No.186 in the ATP rankings, the Canadian has reached a career-high of No.3 back in 2016. He will play American Taylor Fritz in the next round of the Queen’s Championship.

He broke the record set by Ivo Karlovic, who hit 45 aces at the 2015 Halle Open. “Every point in tennis is started by serve that’s why serve is very important in tennis. One key area every serious player should make is his top priority,” a fan reacted on X (formerly known as Twitter). Here are other reactions from fans.
