Mina Kimes believes defense could ‘dramatically’ elevate Lions’ Super Bowl odds which are already high because of Jared Goff-led offense

This offseason, the Detroit Lions rewarded their starting quarterback Jared Goff with a lucrative deal, making him one of the highest-paid QBs in the league– for his performance last season, leading the team to the NFC championship game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Moving ahead to the 2024 season, they stand with fourth-best odds to win the Super Bowl with +1300. Goff is coming off his best season in the NFL, recording 4,575 yards with 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. With him in the lead and the best running back tandem, the Lions’ offense is touted as one of the most well-rounded offenses in the NFL.
However, they stand behind the 49ers in terms of Super Bowl odds. The major reason for that is the Lions’ defense, especially the passing defense, which has often been the source of the team’s problems.
If they transform its game, then it can elevate their Super Bowl odds dramatically, as claimed by Mina Kimes, during her recent appearance at ESPN’s NFL live show.
Something that struck me watching this secondary last year was pass defense, they didn’t play as much man, we typically see in an Aaron Glenn defense. The year before, they played second most man coverage in football. Last season, that brought to 15th in the NFL and I think it was largely because of the weaknesses they had at corner.Mina Kimes said
Aaron Glenn’s coaching crucial for Lions’ Super Bowl hopes
Kimes also appreciated the Lions’ move to add Terrion Arnold to the cornerback squad, believing he can be a ‘solid press man corner’ in the NFL. But also added that getting Arnold’s full potential depends upon defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who has previously done that during his days in New Orleans.
If he [Glenn] can do the same thing with Terrion Arnold and Detroit, I think that will dramatically elevate this team’s Super Bowl odds, which are already strong.Mina Kimes added
Acknowledging the defensive need of the team, the Lions added defensive tackle DJ Reader, veteran outside linebacker Marcus Davenport, and cornerback Amik Robertson from free agency along with promising rookies such as Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. from the 2024 Draft.
