Mina Kimes and Stephen A. Smith were shocked when Dan Orlovsky chose Drake Maye as his favorite quarterback among those drafted since 2020 to build a franchise around. Orlovsky picked Maye over Super Bowl winner Jalen Hurts, Commanders QB Jayden Daniels, Chargers QB Justin Herbert, and the Texans’ CJ Stroud.

Maye is only in his second year of pro football and has already put up more 200-yard passing games with a 135+ passer rating (five times) than Tom Brady managed in his entire two-decade career in Boston. He’s among the favorites for the NFL MVP trophy alongside Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and Colts running back Jonathan Taylor.

Keeping all that in mind, Orlovsky didn’t hesitate to pick Maye as his favorite quarterback to start a franchise with. Olsovsky said in a recent segment of ESPN’s First Take:

I love this guy. I loved calling his games. I fell in love with the character. I fell in love with the traits. He’s taking a rebuilding organization, rebuilding a football team, and having them as legit contenders in the lead for the MVP in the NFL right now.

Stephen A. Smith and Mina Kimes could not believe the words coming out of their colleague’s mouth. A shocked Kimes called out Orlovsky for backtracking on an earlier take in which he did not consider Maye the main reason for the Patriots being 9-2. Kimes screamed in bewilderment:

The audacity to put [Maye] in at number one, twelve minutes after arguing he’s not even the main reason why New England has this record, is wild.

Smith slammed Orlovsky’s list as “trash” and called out the retired NFL quarterback for contradicting himself. He sounded disappointed seeing Maye ahead of Hurts, the reigning Super Bowl champion. Ryan Clark provided the best reaction among the panel. The former Steeler got off his chair and sat behind a giant TV screen.

Clark jumped in, asking Orlovsky why he left Joe Burrow out. He does make a very good point. Burrow has been to the Super Bowl, led the league in completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns, and is a 2x NFL Comeback Player of the Year. So it makes him much more qualified to be on the list.

Clark claimed that Maye should be behind Herbert on the list if he even deserves to be on it in the first place. He hilariously called Maye the Walmart version of the Chargers’ signal caller.

Drake Maye and the Patriots seal a win against divisional rivals

The Patriots welcomed Hall of Famer Randy Moss and future Hall of Famer Rob Gronkowski to Foxborough for a crucial divisional matchup against the New York Jets. Vegas sided with the Boston franchise to secure a win, and they did not disappoint.

Maye was in top form once again. He completed 25 of his 34 pass attempts for 281 yards (7.35%) and threw 1 touchdown. Rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson had a breakout game, racking up 93 all-purpose yards, 2 receiving and 1 rushing touchdown. Veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs caught 9 passes for 105 yards.

The Patriots won the game 27-14 and mathematically secured their first winning season since 2021. Maye firmly established himself as one of the MVP frontrunners. He has 230 completions from 320 pass attempts for 2836 yards (71.9%) for 22 total touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
