Mirra Andreeva is currently participating in the Dubai Tennis Championships. The 12th seed beat America’s Peyton Stearns 6-1, 6-1 to move into the quarterfinals. Following her win, she addressed the disturbing security incident that happened during Emma Raducanu‘s match.

Raducanu on Tuesday (February 18) was up against Karolina Muchova in the second round of the WTA 1000 event. The Brit broke down in tears upon seeing a spectator who ‘exhibited fixated behavior’ the previous day. She used the umpire’s chair to hide herself, following which, she could be seen wiping away her tears.

The man was escorted out of the court by police, and following Raducanu’s 7-6(6), 6-4 defeat, WTA announced that they have banned that person from all tournaments. Raducanu later took to her Instagram and wrote that she would be okay after the difficult experience. Andreeva, following her win over Stearns recalled a horrifying message she received when she was 14 years old.

I remember once when I was young when I was 14 years old, I was playing one of my first ITF tournaments and I received a message after my loss that, ‘Look around, because I’m going to find you and I’m going to cut your arms’.

Mirra Andreeva said at the press conference

Andreeva, however, feels safe in the tournaments because of tight security and having guards around her and thanked the organizers for their commitment to providing security for the players. The 17-year-old Russian, in the quarterfinals, is set to lock horns with World No.2 Iga Swiatek who as well, had encountered a stalker.

We are aware there are a number of fixated individuals who follow players around the world and we work to ensure the players are protected at all times when in the All England Club Grounds.

Wimbledon spokesperson stated (H/T: Daily Mail)

Raducanu hasn’t yet lifted a WTA title since her fairy tale run at the 2021 US Open. Last year she played less than 15 tournaments and vowed to add more events to her schedule.

The Dubai Open was Raducanu’s fifth tournament of the season. Following her Australian Open exit, the 22-year-old suffered first-round defeats in three consecutive tournaments but broke that streak with her win over Maria Sakkari in the first round in Dubai.
