Mirra Andreeva is now a Grand Slam champion. The 19-year-old, the third-youngest woman in this century to win a Grand Slam singles title, cruised past qualifier Maja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 in the Roland Garros final on Saturday (June 6).
And under whose guidance did she taste this glory? It’s Conchita Martinez, the former World No.2 and also the winner of the 1994 Wimbledon, as well as the finalist of the 1998 Australian Open and the 2000 French Open.
Andreeva admitted at the press conference that she was very nervous before entering Court Philippe-Chatrier because she had never played a “tricky” Chwalinska before. So she had to rely a lot on Martinez, who also scouted the semifinal match between Chwalinska and Diana Shnaider to prepare her charge.
But now, the Spaniard thinks her teen protegee would fire her. Because when Martinez was asked at the press conference about what the best thing is about working with Andreeva by Andreeva herself, here’s what she said:
The best thing of working with Mirra Andreeva is we get to play UNO, and I [am] always winning. So that’s the best thing: when I win, you know, against her in UNO.
“That’s it?” Andreeva asked, and Conchita shrugged and responded, “Yeah, that’s it,” as the press room broke into laughter. Andreeva hit back, “Fine, have fun!” Conchita laughed and joked, “I’m fired.“

But only they know the difficult work behind the scenes that culminated in Andreeva becoming a Grand Slam champion. Conchita talked about the “ups and downs” and Andreeva’s “difficult” attitude but lauded her for her willingness to become a better player and also manage her emotions.
Great kudos to her. When she works hard and when she listens and she does everything, you know, she has no limits. So sky is the limit. Even though she won Roland Garros here, there’s still a very long way to go. Are we going to see her the whole time like this?
Conchita Martinez said
Andreeva also spoke glowingly about her coach, and to hear that the 54-year-old is “very proud” of her, is “very, very special” to the youngster.
I really wish, and I really hope, but I’m sure there’s going to be ups and downs. As long as she can continue to learn and to get better, we need to improve in many — I mean, she still have a big room for improvement in every department. So I’m super excited for the future.
Conchina Martinez added
Martinez joined Andreeva’s team in April 2024. Under her guidance, Andreeva has now claimed three Big Titles and also reached a career-high ranking of No.5 last year.
Maria Sharapova congratulates Mirra Andreeva
Mirra Andreeva has become the first Russian woman to win a Grand Slam title since Maria Sharapova. The five-time Major singles champion won her last Major at the 2014 Roland Garros. After her countrywoman’s win, the 39-year-old took to her Instagram story and congratulated Andreeva.

Proud of you Mirra. The celebration says it all. Excited, but not satisfied. The sign of a champion.

Before the French Open, the other two Big Titles Andreeva lifted were in Dubai and Indian Wells last year. This is also her third title of the season after her victories in Adelaide and Linz.
The only time she lost a final this season was in the Madrid Open final against Marta Kostyuk, whom she knocked out in the semifinals of the clay-court Major, in process snapping her 17-match winning streak. It’s also her third victory in a clay-court event. And before this Roland Garros, Andreeva had played just one Grand Slam semifinal (at the 2024 French Open).
