On-ice accidents in the NHL are quite common. Some take days to heal while others months and even worse. There have been many serious cases of players and referees getting the worst of it during an ongoing game.

A similar incident took place on Monday during a game between the Colorado Avalanche vs. the Philadelphia Flyers. While the Avs won the game 3-2, it wasn’t an exactly celebratory situation.

NHL referee Mitch Dunning and Avalanche defenceman Josh Manson collided on the ice resulting in the painful incident. Manson was skating alone along the blueline when he accidentally knocked down referee Dunning.

Mitch Dunning was down for quite a few minutes only being able to move his right hand and feet as Manson spoke to him. The game was stopped as medical trainers surrounded him on the ice.

He was later taken out on a stretcher and informed that he was well after tests and a day’s rest at the hospital. The referee was back home on Tuesday and is expected to make a full recovery much to everyone’s delight.

Fans react on social media following Mitch Dunning’s injury

The incident took place during the early first period at the Wells Fargo Center on Monday night. Following Mitch Dunning’s visit to the hospital the NHL announced that “all neurological signs are normal” and he was able to move on his own accord.

Mitch Dunning officially began his NHL career in 2022 after spending the past three seasons in the OHL. So, far there has been no news of his comeback timeline, but he is expected to make a full recovery soon. Following his exit the game carried on with one referee and two linesmen on Monday.
