On Friday, as temperatures continued to plummet in Toronto, things heated up at the Scotiabank Arena as Mitch Marner made his return to the Toronto Maple Leafs. During this, one of Marner’s teammates, Keegan Kolesar, snatched a “SELLOUT” jersey from a supporter before the forward could see it.
Marner, the Canadian international, left the Maple Leafs last season. After being selected in the 4th round in 2015 by the Maple Leafs, the forward made his NHL debut a year later in 2016.
He would quickly establish himself as one of the cornerstones of the team and penned down a 6-year, $65.4 million contract extension in September 2019. Last season, he was in the final year of this deal.
The Maple Leafs tried their best to convince him to sign a contract extension. However, the player decided it was time to move on.
At the start of July 2025, Marner agreed to a sign-and-trade deal and signed an 8-year deal and got traded to the Vegas Golden Knights, bringing an end to a 9-season stay with his hometown club. On Friday, he made his first start in Toronto as an opposition player.
Fans of the Maple Leafs were left upset following his exit. Before the puck dropped, a fan tried to make their feelings known.
As the players headed out for the warmup, a fan pulled out a No.16 jersey of the Maple Leafs with the words “SELLOUT” written on the back. Kolesar, who was in front of Marner, would snatch this from the fan’s hand and throw it on the ice before his teammate could see it.

However, there were some cheers too. Some supporters inside the arena brought out positive posters for him and thanked him for his services.
The Maple Leafs would also pay him tribute through a video. As the video played out at the Scotiabank Arena, fans would keep their booing aside and cheered him.

The spotlight was firmly on Mitch Marner on Friday as he returned to the Toronto Maple Leafs with the Vegas Golden Knights. Following the game, the 3-time NHL All-Star expressed that he was relief that this was over and admitted that he was a bit emotional after the tribute video.

Like many players, Marner received a tribute video from the Maple Leafs as he returned to them. While speaking with the reporters, he claimed he knew he would get booed by the home fans.
That [booing] was fine. I knew it was going to come … the cheering when I was going off was pretty funny. I didn’t see that one coming. It was really kind of in warmups where it felt odd and weird.
Mitch Marner told the reporters
Mitch Marner on being booed: "It was fine. I knew it was going to come tonight. Yeah, the cheering when I was going off was pretty funny. I didn’t see that one coming in a way. The booing when I had it was what I expected so I just tried to play through it … & do my thing"
