Mitch Marner‘s first season with the Vegas Golden Knights ends in ultimate heartbreak. The forward and his team suffered a 3-0 loss in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final and lost the series against the Carolina Hurricanes. Following the loss, the player got brutally trolled on social media.

Before the start of the season, Marner dominated the headlines following his huge move to Vegas. After spending 9 seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Canadian international left his hometown franchise.

He agreed to a sign-and-trade deal and penned down an 8-year, $96 million contract. He was then traded to the Golden Knights, which brought an end to the “Core 4” era of the Maple Leafs.

In his first season in Vegas, Marner finished the regular season with 80 points (24 goals and 56 assists). He was also having a strong performance in the playoffs.

In Game 1, he stole the spotlight following a huge block in the dying moments. With the Golden Knights leading 5-4, the shot from Hurricanes star Alexander Nikishin was blocked by him.

Game 3 saw Marner score a hat-trick. His 3 goals and 1 assist had put the Golden Knights 4-0 up. While the team did blow this huge lead, they ran out as the winners following a 5-4 2OT victory. At this point, the player had strengthened his chances of winning the Conn Smythe Trophy.

Though he did record a point in Game 4, he drew blanks in Games 5 and 6. In the showdown on Sunday, the 29-year-old had a plus/minus rating of -3 with just 3 shots on goal.

Marner finished the playoffs with 29 points (10 goals and 19 assists) in 22 games. This was the most by any player in the postseason this year. Despite this, he was unable to help his side claim a second title as the Canes captured their first title since 2006.

Social media laughs at Mitch Marner following Stanley Cup final defeat

Defeat in the final is never an easy pill to swallow. It seemed Mitch Marner would finally get his hands on the trophy after leaving Toronto. Unfortunately for him, his side lost 4-2 in the Stanley Cup Final and had to settle for a runners-up finish.

Users on X were quick to troll Marner. Many Maple Leafs fans took a shot at him for his performances in Games 5 and 6. One user wrote, “biggest choker in sports,” while taking a swipe at the right winger.

Check out that and some reactions from X below:

Some even slammed him for his “dark times” comment. Following the Golden Knights’ Western Conference Final victory over the Colorado Avalanche, the ex-Maple Leafs star claimed that there had been some “dark times” in his career.

He then refused to elaborate on the comment before the final and claimed that he would do it if the Golden Knights win the Stanley Cup. It now remains to be seen what he will say about this.

Mitch Marner had vetoed a trade move to Hurricanes in 2025

Last season, Mitch Marner was in the final year of his deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs. With the team not wanting to lose their superstar for free, they tried to trade him to the Carolina Hurricanes. Surprisingly, Marner was the one who vetoed his move.

In January last season, the Colorado Avalanche traded away Mikko Rantanen to the Hurricanes in a 3-team trade. Following a poor stint in North Carolina, the Canes tried to move the Finnish star away.

Before his eventual deal with the Dallas Stars, Rantanen was offered to the Maple Leafs in exchange for Marner. However, the then-Maple Leafs star used his no-trade clause and vetoed his move.

A year later, the Hurricanes defeated the Golden Knights, who had Marner on their side. He was forced to watch from the sidelines as the team he had blocked off a year ago lifted Lord Stanley.

One now wonders what would have happened had Marner not blocked that move. The player will now look to regroup and enjoy a little break before returning to the Golden Knights camp later this year.
