Mitchell Marsh took over the white ball captaincy of Australia from Pat Cummins back in 2023. The player has done well as the captain of the side leading the team to consecutive T20I series’ wins and good one day performances.

He also has had great luck on his side when it comes to the flip off the coin. Marsh has now won 20 tosses in his short tenure so far as the white ball captain. However, that is not the most amusing part about his relationship with the coin.

Statisticians have observed that the Aussie skipper has elected to bowl each of the 20 times. He has not resorted to batting first even once in all these toss wins. He strongly believed that bowling first was the way to go in T20I cricket.

Traditionally teams would always look to bat first in Test cricket or ODI cricket. Back then, the philosophy of putting runs on the board and applying scoreboard pressure onto the chasing team was the thought process of most captains. Tests and ODIs still see that happening, but T20 cricket has seen an algorithm of its own.

With the game so fast paced, captains believe that winning the toss and bowling first gives them a sense of certainty as they have time to see how the pitch plays. They also feel they can strategize better once they know how many runs, they have to chase. The ball also tends to get wet in the second innings because of the dew present later at night aiding batting big time.

Mitchell Marsh certainly belongs to that school of thinking and his choices reflect it. In the 20 decisions of his choice to bowl first, Australia has won 13 matches and lost 7. Clearly in the bigger picture, this strategy has worked for the team and the players look comfortable going behind a score rather than setting.

Indian captains have created an unwanted toss record in recent times

The Indian team in the last few years has created an incredibly unwanted record with the tosses. The team beating all odds has now lost the last 15 tosses in a row across captains. Shubman Gill recently lost all the five tosses in the Test series against England. Prior to that, Rohit Sharma lost all the five tosses at the Champions Trophy which India eventually won.

Prior to the Champions Trophy, Rohit Sharma had lost all the tosses in the ODI series against England at home. The point from where India started to have a misfortune with the coin was when Suryakumar Yadav lost the toss in the last two T20Is against the same opposition.

A culmination of this makes India stand at 15 toss losses in a row. Funnily enough India hasn’t won a single toss in ODI cricket as well since the 2023 World Cup. This poor run of tosses started in the final against Australia when Pat Cummins surprisingly decided to bowl and handed India a disappointing defeat.

Though apart from that poor loss in the final, India has done well in all the formats despite not getting to decide whether to bat or bowl. However, in crunch games it is believed that the toss does matter and at some point, India would need the luck of the coin. With the Asia Cup and two World Cups coming ahead, they would hope to change their fortunes with the coin and get some decisions in their favor.
