The sports betting drama of Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz shook the MLB world. The two Cleveland Guardians pitchers have been indicted for rigging pitches. In order to avoid more such drama in the future, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has worked with the stakeholders and announced a $200 betting limit on pitches.
In July, the MLB placed Ortiz on a non-disciplinary leave till the All-Star Break. It was later extended up to August 31. The 26-year-old was placed on leave after he was found suspicious for two pitches. Near the end of July, Clase was also placed on leave.
The Dominican International, who had been one of the top relief pitchers in the league, was reported to have been rigging pitches since 2023.
In a 23-page indictment, he was involved in a betting scandal and would purposely throw a ball as his first pitch of an at-bat. He was also reported to be throwing more sliders than cutters and would even provide money to bettors to gamble on himself and communicate with them during the games.

According to the indictment filed by the prosecutors, Ortiz would join this betting scandal in June this year. The pitcher would receive $5,000 for throwing a ball. Clase, meanwhile, received this same amount for organizing this.
A few days later, Ortiz would do this again. This time, the two of them would receive $7,000.

With the league under immense fire from fans on social media regarding this, they made an announcement. In an issue released on Monday, the MLB and its sportsbook partners announced a $200 betting limit on pitches from here on.
I commend the industry for working with us to take action on a national solution to address the risks posed by these pitch-level markets, which are particularly vulnerable to integrity concerns. We look forward to continuing to work with all stakeholders, including licensed sports betting operators, elected officials and regulators, to ensure we are always protecting the integrity of our game.

They need to be canceled all together
— Mitch Lafon (@mitchlafon) November 10, 2025
This is not the solution.
— floridanow1 (@floridanow1) November 11, 2025
This is the solution:
1st. Cancel all prop bets
2nd Start putting athletes/managers in prison for 10 yrs who are caught in any scandals — that will stop all cooperation.
Bandaid solution. Sports betting is ruining the game
