Baseball’s first female manager Rachel Balkovec suffers nasty injury during hitting drill with Yankees

The history-maker Rachel Balkovec will have to wait some more time for her special moment in the Minor League Baseball (MiLB).
Back in January 2022, the Omaha native was earlier announced as the first-ever female manager of a MiLB ballclub. Rachel will be managing Tampa Tarpons, the Low-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, where she has been the hitting coach since 2019.
Rachel, earlier this week, stated that she was hit in the face with a baseball during a hitting drill, according to a report in the New York Post. Although she luckily didn’t suffer a concussion, doctors advised her to take a minimum of five to seven days off for rest while recovering from the injury.
“Well I *DID* have several modelling contracts lined up, but this put a wrench in those plans,” she said in her post in her recent Instagram post. “Thanks for all of the messages—Just feeling extremely lucky, and also like I’ll never throw side flips again for the rest of eternity. This is why you have to life your life in a way that you’re okay leaving it at any moment. Not a minute to waste being, thinking or playing small.”
“Already miss being around the players and staff”
The 34-year-old, who began her pro baseball career as a strength and conditioning coach with a St. Louis Cardinals minor-league affiliate, also later issued a team statement.
“All things considered, I feel very fortunate,” she said in a statement on Wednesday. “The doctors have asked me to be smart about limiting my activities over the next several days, and I plan on following their guidance. As much as I already miss being around the players and staff, I do not anticipate this affecting my role and responsibilities for the regular season.”
