“I just tried to be there for him”: Freddie Freeman’s emotional exchange after José Iglesias cried on first base

Colorado Rockies short stop José Iglesias hit a run scoring single from the first at-bat of the season on Friday. However, when he stood at the first base, tears began to flow uncontrollably.

Iglesias’ dad had unfortunately recently passed away, and he had seen almost every hit that his son had made. This took a toll on the short stop, as he broke down into tears in the memory of his father. The Dodgers new first baseman Freddie Freeman however, came over in concern, and asked what happened and how Iglesias was doing.

After finding out the reason why Iglesias was emotional Freeman gave a quick little gesture of love by hugging him, in what was a great interaction between the two players.

just tried to be there for him, console him and just know that it’s more than a game,”  Freeman said to usatoday.com. “You never know what any of us are going through in life. If he didn’t tell me, I would never have known that he had lost his father a couple of weeks ago. So I think it just kind of reminds you to just have some compassion and some humility and just be kind to others. Because, in that moment, all I wanted to do was hug that guy.”
