“An exceptional overpay,” MLB insider and Brian Cashman talks about Yankees Plan B following Juan Soto’s $765 million move to Mets
MLB insider Jeff Passan believes the Yankees will be grateful to not have to pay Juan Soto $50 million AAV down the line.

In a recent chat with Buster Olney on ‘Baseball Tonight’, MLB insider Jeff Passan discussed what it meant for the New York Yankees to lose Juan Soto. He believes the pinstripes will be glad 10 years down to not have to pay $50 million for the outfielder.
The NY Yankees‘ final offer for Soto was 16 year $760 million. However, Soto chose the highest bid from their cross-city rivals, the New York Mets, for a 15-year $765 million deal. While the loss of the star outfielder left a hole in the lineup, the team is already moving forward on their Plan B.
While Passan noted that it was surprising to see the organization lose Soto to the Mets, on the other hand, he finds it a good opportunity for the team to add more players by investing $760 million.
Passan further believes age was a major factor in the high-deal signing. In 2024, at only 26 years, Soto has highlighted his resume with brilliant performance. Following his young age, many believe he’ll only grow in the future, hence the massive investment.
However, there are many who feel the ‘deal’ was an exaggeration instead. Yankees executive Brian Cashman, on the other hand, is proud of them for going out of their way to extend the $760 million deal.

He feels like even without Soto they have a solid lineup and will only keep adding to that to strengthen by the 2025 season. Juan Soto played a crucial role in boosting the Yanks to the World Series. However, they are moving past the Soto buzz to concentrate on free agency.
Brian Cashman talks about Yankees Plan B after Juan Soto loss
Brian Cashman and the team did not waste time after Juan Soto announced his preferred team name. Cashman said he was immediately on a call with the staff to discuss their next move.
The team recently penned an 8-year $218 million contract with ace pitcher Max Fried. He’ll most likely play No.2 behind Gerrit Cole in rotation. Apart from Fried, the team also has an interest in Japanese ace Roki Sasaki and Teoscar Hernandez.
Both players are considered favorites for Los Angeles Dodgers, but no official stance has been taken yet. Apart from them, the team is also looking into other offensive players to boost their lineup for the 2025 World Series challenge.

Unfortunately, during their pursuit for Soto, the team ended up losing Blake Snell to the Dodgers. Which players will be added in the Bronx is still shrouded in mystery. Only time will tell, but all signings are rumored to be done by Sunday.
