Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who was entering the final year of his contract, will continue for three more years but the financial terms were not disclosed. The Dodgers announced the extension on Friday ahead of the upcoming Major League Baseball (MLB) season.

Roberts, who took over from Don Mattingly at the beginning of the 2016 season, has won 62% of his games (542-329), the best record in baseball over the last six seasons. During his tenure, Los Angeles has won five National League West titles, three NL pennants and the 2020 World Series (after 32 long years) before losing to the Atlanta Braves in the NL Championship Series.

To be able to wear the Dodgers uniform, and represent this world-class organization on and off the field, is truly an honour,” Roberts said in a statement about his re-appointment to the role.

“We didn’t start talking about this until right before the lockout,” he added. “I think we just kind of had little kind of, we’re going to try to figure something out and then after the lockout, and then we kind of got, I don’t want to say sidetracked.”

“Our organization should focus on the players”

The Japanese-American baseball manager’s contract extension could have been completed earlier if it weren’t for the lockout.

I knew it was going to get done, I was hopeful. It wasn’t a priority for me individually. I think that we as an organization should focus on the players, and then obviously with what happened with Freddie, and things took precedence, which I completely understood and agreed with. But to get it done before the season, I think, it’s exciting for me and my family,” Roberts said.

Earlier, the 49-year-old Dave also looked way too confident about the Dodgers’ chances of winning yet another World Series title in the 2022 season.
