“Do better MLB he was out by a mile”- A contentious decission between the Minnesota Twins and the Toronto Blue Jays
Twins vs Blue Jays
On Sunday, the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Minnesota Twins after 10 innings, 3-2. There was a lot of controversy surrounding the play that ultimately resulted in Cavan Biggio’s game-winning RBI, scoring newly acquired Blue Jay Whit Merrifield. The Twins dugout, specifically manager Rocco Baldelli, used many strong words in response. The play-by-play, to start, does not do the play justice. Now it only reads: “Biggio hit sacrifice fly to left, Merrifield scores.” It was a lot more than that.
In actuality, a double play was first called that would have ended the inning. Merrifield was on third and there was one out. Biggio flew out, while Merrifield was ruled out at home plate on a close play after tagging up. The league overturned the call after concluding that Twins catcher Gary Sanchez had improperly impeded Merrifield’s opportunities to score. It was close enough to warrant a review.
Sanchez clearly applies the tag to Merrifield in the overhead shot before touching home plate. On that, we should all concur. On the basis of the plate-blocking rule, the decision was reversed. Remember that the umpires at this Target Field location were only doing what the league office’s replay centre in New York had instructed them to do. That is how it operates.
Minnesota Twins move to 57-51 on the season
Baldelli immediately argued with the officials on the field and, in my opinion, got what he paid for when he was ejected. He wasn’t finished. He spoke out harshly against the call following the game.
“That play has not been called since the beginning of replay more than a couple of times. In all of baseball, the thousands and thousands of games and plays at home where the catcher actually does block the plate — over and over and over again — that play has virtually never been called,” Baldelli said. “For someone to step in, in that situation, and ultimately make a decision that that was blocking the plate, that’s beyond embarrassing for our game, for all the players out there on both sides of the field working their ass off, for the entire game, it’s completely unacceptable.“
“I can’t even believe I’m sitting here talking to you guys about this right now. It’s one of the worst moments I think we’ve seen of umpiring in any game I’ve ever been a part of in baseball. I think it was pathetic, what just played out. I could go on and on and on about this. The umpires on the field have nothing to do with it. They made a play on the field, which was the right call, which every person in all of baseball, including the umpires, know is the proper call and someone in New York decided that that was worthy of being overturned on the field.”
The Minnesota Twins’ season record now stands at 57-51, good for first place in the AL Central despite the loss. The White Sox are only two games behind the Minnesota Twins with both the Guardians and White Sox winning on Sunday, cutting the Twins’ advantage over the Guardians to one game.
