The rivalry between the Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers has notched up a level this year. The meeting of the two Texas teams in the American League Championship Series (ALCS) has added a new flavor to this hotly contest matchup. Emotions are always on a high in these games and such was the case was Adolis Garcia who celebrated his three-run home run wildly.
The Rangers came into this matchup on the back of two successive defeats. Having won the first two games at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, they suffered consecutive losses at home in Arlington. This added more pressure on them. After being 2-1 down in the game, Garcia turned the tide in his side’s favor with a massive three-run bomb.
Garcia who has emerged as one of the key hitters for the Rangers had gone 0-for-2 before this. With the runners on first and third base, he crushed a 95 mph fastball from Justin Verlander in the sixth inning. This gave his team a 2-4 lead after trailing 2-1. He would then proceed to give the fans one of the coolest celebrations in postseason history.
He would take a few steps to the base while watching the ball fly in the stands. As the ball landed in the stands, the stadium broke into a huge roar. Garcia would proceed to spike his bat down the floor and utter some words before rounding off the bases.
“We're in the postseason, you know? It's the moment. You hit a ball like that, you're going to celebrate. It's where we're at right now.”Garcia noted, as per MLB.com
Adolis Garcia’s heroics unable to lead Texas Rangers to victory in Game 5
The one thing that makes baseball fun to watch is the unpredictable nature of the sport. After Adolis Garcia crushed his shot in the sixth inning to give his side the lead, it seemed destined that the Texas Rangers would not close out the win. The momentum was on their side after all. However, Jose Altuve and the Houston Astros had other plans.
As they have done time and again, the Astros came back from the dead. One of the major developments during this game took in the eighth inning when Garcia was hit by a pitch. This led to the benches being cleared in Arlington. This was not the first time benches had been cleared between these two, as seen during the month of August. Garcia’s grand slam in the blowout win saw players from both sides rush out after a fight had ignited.
The benches-clearing incident could have washed away the momentum they had. Just like Garcia, Altuve launched his own three-run go-ahead home run. This came in the top of the ninth inning which saw them take a 5-4 lead. Shocked by what had just happened, the Rangers were unable to mount another comeback and thus Garcia’s heroics failed to lead his team to victory.
As a result of this, the Rangers are now standing on the brink of elimination. The Astros could complete one of the greatest ALCS comebacks if they win Game 6 in Houston next time around. The Rangers have to win the game to force a Game 7. Who will come out on top of this topsy-turvy rivalry series, will be interesting to see.
