The 2023 season is proving to be one of the worst ones for Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Alek Manoah. The southpaw endured a great season last time out and became the team’s ace. However, he struggled heavily this season and has bounced back from the major and minor leagues. A surprising twist of the tale in this latest chapter came a few days back when it was reported he refused to arrive at the minor league.
After some poor performance, he was sent down to the Blue Jays’ Triple-A side. Things did not get any better for him there as he suffered another poor run of form in the minors. He was though called back to the majors in July. In his first game back, it seemed he was back to his best against the Detroit Tigers. The fans though were not happy with his outing and bashed him.
In the span of six games where he was called up again, he pitched with a 4.91 era. His confidence probably took a major hit when he accidentally hit LA Angels’ Taylor Ward on the face. He was later sent down to the minors again. However, as per reports he was upset about this decision.
The team though felt that he was not their best option and hoped he could get some form back in their minors. To their shock, they would not hear from Manoah as he went missing in action. The pitcher never showed up in Buffalo which has now further damaged the already broken relationship with the team.
Alek Manoah unlikely to pitch again in 2023
Setbacks are one of the most unlucky aspects of life. Every professional player suffers this once in a while. It is no surprise that Alek Manoah has suffered a huge setback both physically and emotionally this season. The impact of it can be clearly felt on the mound through his performance. However, his latest actions have now raised questions regarding his professionalism.
A major reason for the angry reactions from fans and experts has been because of his words. The pitcher had previously accused NY Yankees ace Gerrit Cole of being a cheater. Cole was a part of the Houston Astros side which was deemed to have cheated by sign-stealing. Manoah was not a fan of this and called him out. Now his own actions are leading others to have a go at him.
Following this action from Manoah, it is likely that he will not pitch again in 2023. This could also bring an abrupt end to his story with the Blue Jays. What steps will the club take, if any, against him for this would be an interesting thing to look out for.
This also comes at a time when the Blue Jays are firmly in the mix for playoff spots. They will now have to keep this Manoah situation aside and focus on the upcoming games if they are to play October baseball.
