Alex Rodriguez aka ‘A-Rod’ has undoubtedly been one of the most prominent faces in the history of Major League Baseball (MLB) even after his retirement from the sport. The veteran Yankees’ shortstop and third baseman matched his professional career success as an entrepreneur and philanthropist as well.

In a recent promo video for Shark Tank US, the richest baseball star walked past his initial struggles and how a person from a middle-class family went on to accumulate a net worth of a whopping $350 million. Rodriguez also went on to reveal that his father left their family and how his mother solely raised him up.

“I was born in New York City and my parents are both immigrants from the Dominican Republic. My dad left us when I was about 10 and then I was raised by a single mother here in Miami.

“My mother was a workhorse. She would wake up at seven, drop us off at school, go be a secretary and then go serve tables at night. It was quite an inspiration to watch her grind it out every day,” Alex said in the video.

The 48-year-old also mentioned that the beginning of his MLB journey with the Seattle Mariners changed his life. Notably, the Mariners signed Alex in 1994 on a three-year contract worth a $1.3 million deal with a $1 million signing bonus.

He added: “Luckily for me, I had the boys and girls club where I learned how to play baseball and I had a place to do my homework every day after school. I got a scholarship to the University of Miami but the Mariners came calling and they drafted me number one overall.

“The first two things they did – buy my mother a house and a car. I think to this day the happiest day of my life.”
