New York Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo is ready for the 2024 season with a new look without his iconic bushy red beard. Although the player himself stated that he feels “younger” in his current look, the fans do not share the same sentiment. Fans are quite upset to see his beard gone due to the Yankees’ facial hair rule.
Verdugo was traded by the Boston Red Sox in December and joined the pinstripes soon after. However, he was forced to shave off his red beard due to the team’s 1970s rule. It’s a long-standing rule that asserting players that they can’t have facial hair, but a mustache is acceptable.
Verdugo who rocked the big ol’ fuzzy ginger beard is now showing up on the field with a clean shave. During the picture day, he showed up donning a heavy set of silver chains as a shoutout to his latest style. In a recent interview, he was questioned if Verdugo has any thoughts on growing a mustache,
Nah, I can’t do it, brother, it’s not the right look…I look a little suspect.Alex Verdugo as per NY Post.
Later he stated that he liked his new look, “It rejuvenated me a little bit. It made me feel a little bit younger.” The Yankees facial hair rule was created by the late owner George Steinbrenner in the 1970s claiming he was “trying to instill a certain sense of order and discipline.”
Alex Verdugo talks about spring training and upcoming 2024 season in latest interview
During a recent interview between sports reporter Steve Serby and Alex Verdugo, the NY Yankees outfielder was asked questions related to the ongoing spring training, and personal choices. Apart from questions related to his beard, he was asked about his favorite movies, actors and actresses, players on the team, and many more.
Regardless his goals and career choices were the highlight questions following the unlikely trade that occurred between two rival teams in December. He revealed his personal goals for the 2024 season stating,
I need to skip out the home runs, skip on that, I need to focus on getting a Gold Glove, keeping my batting average high and scoring as many runs as I possibly can.Alex Verdugo as per NY Post.
He asserted that he’s aiming for the Gold Glove this year after coming short of it last year. “I’m gonna make sure there’s no doubts this year,” he said. He further noted that he wants to prove what Aaron Judge said to the front office about him is true. “I’m a big fan, big advocate on Judge,” Verdugo said.
Judge has been very much involved with the trade of Verdugo and the latter feels motivated enough to prove to the team his worth. Furthermore, he said that this year the Yankees have “a very lethal lineup” and can’t wait for the 2024 season to start.
