“Hope for the best”- Andrew Benintendi exits match against the Rays due to injury

Andrew Benintendi

Andrew Benintendi’s right wrist injury forced him to leave Friday night’s 9-0 defeat to the Tampa Bay Rays, adding to the New York Yankees’ injury troubles. Andrew Benintendi’s wrist had negative X-rays, and on Saturday, he will get an MRI. Aaron Boone, the manager of the Yankees, claimed that Benintendi felt a “pop” in his wrist.

“He’s got some numbness in his fingers right now,” Boone said. “So we’ll have to get all the MRIs and stuff tomorrow, which will tell us more. But yeah, right now just unfortunate, obviously, for him to have that happen, and hope for the best tomorrow.”

In his second at-bat against Rays starter Jeffrey Springs, Benintendi, who hit a leadoff double in the first inning, swung and missed on the first pitch, a 90 mph sinker, and began frantically shaking his right hand. Benintendi was immediately escorted back to the dugout by manager Aaron Boone and chief athletic trainer Tim Lentych of the Yankees. Third baseman Andrew Benintendi was replaced by rookie Oswaldo Cabrera in left field.

Despite having a.206 batting average and no home runs in his first 18 games in pinstripes after being acquired from the Kansas City Royals, Benintendi had been one of the few Yankees players to recently swing a hot bat. As of Friday night, he has played 10 games and was hitting.325 with two doubles, two home runs, and seven RBIs. “Obviously, a big [loss],” Boone said. “Obviously, an important guy in our lineup right now, especially as we struggle as much as we are right now offensively. Benny has been hitting the ball really well. So we’re hoping the best for him tomorrow.”

Although Benintendi’s condition is uncertain, the Yankees will be without yet another left-handed hitter in the lineup with Anthony Rizzo out with a strained lower back. After being scratched from the starting lineup against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night due to persistent back problems, Boone revealed on Friday that Rizzo had undergone an epidural. On Thursday, a day off for the Yankees, Rizzo visited back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins, the spine advisor for the majority of L.A. professional sports teams, including the Dodgers, Lakers, and Clippers.
