The regular season of the MLB has now come to a close. In another breathtaking 162-game full season, plenty of records were broken as some players achieved superstardom. However, like every year there have been the highs and the lows. Though several players underperformed there was one person who was criticized for their performance every time they were on the field. This person was umpire Angel Hernandez.

Hernandez has hard a difficult time behind the plate. He has missed several calls which has led to wide outrage. During a game between the Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants, he made some crucial errors. This led to fans calling him out while labeling him the “worst umpire by far”. He has now finished the season with the worst rating.

While officiating is one of the hardest things in MLB, one would expect an umpire of Hernandez’s caliber to perform with consistency. Unfortunately for him, the only consistent performance he had was with the wrong calls. A report from the Umpire Auditor which checks the umpire scorecard and performances, he collected 161 bad calls in 10 games this year.

Angel Hernandez and poor officiating: A nightmare for fans

Angel Hernandez has been on the baseball scene for a long time now. The 62-year-old Cuban made his return to officiating following his back injuries. His return behind the batters’ box has not gone well down though. At the end of the regular season, he would see his name claim the spotlight for the wrong reasons as he was named the worst umpire through ratings.

Following his back surgery, he was instilled in the Triple-A for rehab. His stint there started making headlines as he messed up several decisions. Despite this, he was allowed to return and officiate major league games. On two separate occasions this year, he missed 15 calls – one during the Marlins-Yankees game on August 12 and the Pirates-Nationals game on September 14.

As his name continued to be debated, he caught the attention of audiences once again, this time for his involvement with Bryce Harper. The duo would engage in a brutal war of words over a critical check-swing call. The Phillies slugger was later ejected from the game. Harper would later go on to criticize him and unleash his fury while slamming his helmet on the ground.

With the postseason around the corner, fans have now started to worry whether he will be appointed with another duty. Another poor game from him could play a significant part in the knockout phases. Considering his form, the MLB now has a crucial decision to make regarding Hernandez and his umpiring woes
