New season, same old Angel Hernandez. The veteran MLB umpire has once again become the talk of the town following his poor decisions on Sunday during the divisional matchup between the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees.

The first big call from Hernandez came in the first inning itself as Gleyber Torres stepped up to the plate. He was able to work out a 3-2 count against Blue Jays’ starting pitcher Bowden Francis before experiencing something that left him scratching his head in disbelief.

Francis appeared to have stumbled out during his windup which lead to Torres leaving the batter’s box. However, the Blue Jays pitcher did threw out the pitch which was high above the strike zone.

This would have resulted in a balk or a ball which would have seen Torres reach the first base comfortably. Hernandez though called it a third strike which meant the Yankees star was out.

This decision from the 62-year-old official led to Yankees coach Aaron Boone coming out of his dugout and having a word with him and his crew. The fans present in the Yankee stadium expressed their displeasure against this decision by loudly booing him and by starting an NSFW chant.

Things got worse for him later on in the sixth inning as this time his decision went in favor of the Yankees. As Blue Jays’ Tim Mayza worked a 1-0 count against Oswaldo Cabrera, the pitcher threw the ball perfectly in the middle. Surprisingly, Hernandez labeled it as a ball and the count went up 2-0.

While officiating is a hard task, one would expect a much better performance from a veteran person. Last season, Angel Hernandez was rated as the worst umpire in MLB in 2023 after his poor calls during the campaign. With the way things have gone on for him, he looks in danger of finding his name in this category once again.

Fans on X have brutally attacked Hernandez for his decisions in this game. While many commented that he should be relieved off his duties, one X user labeled him an “embarrassment“.
