“The fastball was crisp”- Austin Gomber acquires 4.2 scoreless innings for the Rockies

When he came on in the second inning, his Rockies were trailing by nine runs. However, Austin Gomber, a left-hander, pitched as though Wednesday was only the beginning of much better things. The greatest aspect of the Rockies’ 16-4 loss to the Rangers at Coors Field was Austin Gomber’s four and a third innings of shutout baseball. His performance, however, cannot be isolated from the fact that José Urea’s nine run effort in the first 1 1/3 innings forced him into the game.
Austin Gomber started for the Rockies‘ starting rotation both last season and this one. He has recently been kept in the bullpen due to a lot of consistency and a small circumstance. Austin Gomber has faced difficulties because of the erratic bullpen work schedule. Making the most of his current position, however, meant limiting the Rangers to only two baserunners on Wednesday.
“You don’t get the side sessions, so it’s a little difficult to, quote-unquote, work on things,” Gomber said. “But there’s a positive to just competing your way out of it. I don’t have days to overthink things. I’m pretty much ready to pitch every day, for the most part.”

Austin Gomber has replaced Antonio Senzatela

Manager Bud Black observed a performance that would fit in with any role on a terrible day, despite the fact that the 3-2 homestand was a plus. “‘Gomby’ threw the ball outstanding,” Black said. “I liked the change. The fastball was crisp. He threw a couple good curveballs. A four-pitch mix — the slider came into play against [Nathaniel] Lowe and [Corey] Seager. Efficient. He got his outs and worked fast.”
When Antonio Senzatela made his shoulder injury comeback at the beginning of the second half, Austin Gomber was transferred to the bullpen. On July 24, he took over for an ineffective Chad Kuhl, and in 3 2/3 innings in a 10-9 Rockies defeat, he limited the Brewers to one run.
Since then, most of Gomber’s chances have come during dreadful defeats like Wednesday’s. He took Senzatela’s spot following Senzatela’s season-ending knee injury last Thursday when he was last seen. Albert Pujols’ pinch-hit grand slam, which surpassed the game’s all-time greats with seemingly every swing, was the only memorable play in Gomber’s 2 1/3 innings of work. Gomber gave up five runs on three hits and three walks.
