Hitting the ball out of the park for a home run in baseball is no easy feat. A player needs to have the proper power and concentration to connect for a big fly. What’s more difficult than hitting home runs is doing that in successive games. On Saturday night, against the Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves’ Austin Riley scripted history. This was his fifth straight game with a home run.

The third baseman was once again at his best. He went 2-for-4 against the Brewers. The milestone moment came in the third inning with the game still scoreless. Riley stepped up and connected the ball pretty well to give his side a 3-0 lead. However, his side was unable to add more runs and also failed to protect their lead as the Brewers won the game 4-3.

The Braves have emerged as the best team in MLB this season. Despite this loss, their record of 63-34 is still the best in the whole league. In this run, they have hit plenty of home runs. During this five game spell, Riley has managed to grab six home runs. In doing so he has taken his home run count from 16 to 22 in a flash.

However, this game will be remembered for the sensational debut of Sal Frelick. The rookie was called up earlier by the Brewers for his MLB debut. He could not have asked for a much better debut. The youngster recorded three hits in his first three bats, took two brilliant catches, and drove in the winning run through a sacrifice fly. This helped the Brewers to a much-needed victory.

Austin Riley eyes historic record as red-hot form continues

While taking nothing from the debut of Sal Frelick, the achievement of Austin Riley is no short feat. He etched his name in the Braves’ history book with the three-run home run against the Brewers. He also tied the record for the most RBIs cashed in this period. Riley’s home run means he has batted in sixteen runs in his last five games, the most by a Braves player since the record began in 1920.

Well, there have been several more instances than this. Last season, Angels’ Mike Trout managed to hit home runs in seven consecutive games. However, the record is for eight straight games, jointly held by Ken Griffey Jr. and Don Mattingly. The duo accomplished this exclusive feat in the 1993 and 1987 seasons respectively.

It remains to be seen whether Riley can match this record or even surpass it. It usually takes one swing of the bat to change things. Given the form he is in, very few would bet against it. The Braves fans would certainly hope that he can pull it off, as the team has suffered a slight bump in recent weeks. They are 4-6 in their last 10 games, having lost the last two series. The rubber match on Sunday will decides who wins the series.
