The 2023 MLB season has produced some major shocks this year. One of them, for many, is the emergence of the Baltimore Orioles. The O’s have had disappointing campaigns previously, and very few predicted this outcome at the start of the season. Not only have they stunned the other teams in the AL East, but they are now the second team to cross the 90-win mark after the Atlanta Braves following a thrilling matchup against the Boston Red Sox.
The two teams have had contrasting seasons this year. While the O’s have excelled beyond expectations, the Red Sox have flattered. However, the game on Saturday night turned out to be one of the contenders for the game of the year, as the visitors edged them out 13-12.
A game that was delayed by rain saw the Red Sox jump on top first with a two-run home run by Justin Turner. The Orioles, as they have done all season, found a way back, first from a wild throw and then a three-run shot by Aaron Hicks, a former NY Yankees player. They would soon take a 7-2 lead, only for starting pitcher Jack Flaherty to struggle.
The Red Sox would score four runs in the fourth to make it a 7-6 game. The twists and turns continued as the visitors kept on slamming home runs. They would find themselves leading at the bottom of the ninth. The Red Sox continued to gather single and double hits and mount the pressure. Ultimately, they fell short at the finish as Emmanuel Valdez hit a flyout for the final out with two men on base.
Baltimore Orioles win seventh successive game to continue impressive form
To think that the Baltimore Orioles would possess the best record in the American League come September was something that was laughed at. In recent years, they have lost several big players. However, the team has continued its rebuild and with a young, talented roster, they look to tear apart any team on their day.
As per official MLB stats, this is the first time since 2014 that the Orioles have registered 90 wins in a season. That year, they finished with a 96-66 record and reached the ALCS, where they got swept by the Kansas City Royals. The O’s would return to playoffs in 2016 with an 89-73 record but lose the wild card game to the Toronto Blue Jays.
This year, things have been different, though. Their 13-12 win over the Red Sox was their seventh victory on the bounce. A win on Sunday night could see them register a sweep of the nine-time World Series winner. With over 20 games to go, the O’s will now be looking to hit the three-digit mark in the wins column before the regular season ends.
