“Happy Retirement”- Bartolo Colon says goodbye to the game of baseball
Bartolo Colon
Bartolo Colon discussed his future plans with Spanish radio presenter Johnny Trujillo before Saturday’s Mets Old Timers Game at Citi Field. Bartolo Colon informed Trujillo that after one more winter league season, he will retire from professional baseball, which will undoubtedly come as terrible news to his fans throughout the world.
“God willing, I would like to pitch a couple of games [with Águilas Cibaeñas of the Dominican Winter League] so I can say goodbye to the game of baseball and to all those Dominican fans because they deserve it,” Colon said.
For Cleveland, the Expos, White Sox, Angels, Red Sox, Yankees, A’s, Mets, Braves, Twins, and Rangers throughout the course of 21 MLB seasons from 1997 to 2018, Colon made his pitching debut. He earned the 2005 American League Cy Young Award with the Angels and was a four-time All-Star. He made 10 starts out of 17 postseason appearances overall and had an ERA of 3.49. In 3 1/3 innings of relief work for the Mets against the Royals in the 2015 World Series, he didn’t give up an earned run.

Bartolo Colon’s most memorable moment in MLB
However, his lone career home run at the plate, which improbably came off Padres right-hander James Shields at Petco Park on May 7, 2016, may have been Colon’s most memorable moment. The achievement increased Colon’s already sizable fan base, who had grown to be a folk hero among baseball fans. Colon was reportedly interested in returning to the Major League earlier this year, ideally with the Mets, but that never happened, and it now seems the 49-year-old right-hander will retire later this year.
Nevertheless, there was one statement from his conversation with Trujillo that might provide Colon fans some optimism that he’ll return at some point: “I have never stopped practicing,” Colon said. “I am still practicing in my town and pitching against the kids over there. I have always been ready for anything, for whatever comes my way. I just keep working.”
