New York Mets general manager Billy Eppler recently implied on starting off 2023’s “aggressive” free agency, as the Hot Stove season marks its beginning. With the new campaign on its way, all MLB teams are vying for the most shouted players who will be dipping their toes in the market soon.

The aim of MLB teams is either to build off a successful season or try to add another high-aimed player to boost the team’s performance. Though it’s only in its starting phase, Eppler is not taking the risk as he warns other baseball teams of the fast and aggressive approach. With the will to sustain last year’s 101 performance, the team is deciding on its next step.

Most of all MLB teams are eyeing star pitcher Jacob deGrom as he hits the free market. If Eppler is to keep him with the Mets, he’ll need to move faster than pre-booked teams who have started lining up for their chance.

Eppler noted, “If anybody wants to turn this into NBA free agency or NFL free agency, I’m all for it, all for it”. for As per Newsday Sports writer Tim Healy, Eppler stated, “We kind of made a pact to stay in touch”. As of now, he’s been in talks with deGrom’s agent, Stephen Veltman of VC Sports Group.

The 34-year-old central player for the Mets team will finally be hitting the market after staying with the team for a long time. Though he has not clearly stated that he wanted to move on, rather suggested he may be willing to stay for a while longer.

While attending the 2022 GM meeting, Eppler admitted that both parties are yet to make a contract, but are willing to discuss things. Again during a conversation with reporters on Tuesday, he stated that he believes the 2x Cy Young winner will return to their team.

He mentioned, “I think there’s a good deal of interest there, on his part. That was articulated a number of times through the season and reiterated in our most recent conversations.” deGrom’s performance at the elite level didn’t slow down even after injuries held him back for a few times.

deGrom donning the Mets jersey will be crucial for the team, given his past track records. Though ultimately, he has the right to decide on his future path, the Mets hope he’ll return to them after coming to a mutual consent for the contract papers. In the last three seasons, he performed in 39 games, hinting at his high-level capability.
