WATCH: “Shows off the range” – Blue Jays’ George Springer claims spectacular catch against Red Sox

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer has been very solid for his side early this Major League Baseball (MLB) season. His impressive start continued on Monday night as the Connecticut native surely became the absurd catcher-of-the-year candidate in a game versus the Boston Red Sox at Rogers Centre.

With two out in the bottom of the fifth in a scoreless game, Boston catcher Kevin Plawecki put a great swing shot to a pitch from the 27-year-old Jose Berrios. It seemed that he had himself an extra-base hit until Springer came flying in between to the left centre field and leapt into the air to make a spectacular diving grab.

Springer has been in great form for the Jays so far this year, hitting .263 with three home runs through 15 games. Adding to this, his defence has been one step ahead, with this catch helping prove that case.

“Am glad I could get there”

Looks like the Blue Jays fans are finally getting their first look at how Springer can play at 100-per cent health as quad injuries had earlier slowed his start to the season.

That’s probably my favourite one. It just got hit, and I just ran,” Springer said, as quoted by MLB.com. “I could tell that I was kind of getting close to it and something told me that the wall was getting close, but I knew I had a beat on it. I knew I was committed to going for it, and I’m glad I could get there.”

Adding to this, Hyun Jin Ryu, who is the typically reserved Blue Jays ace, didn’t shy away from showing his appreciation after the catch.

That was a great catch,” Ryu said through an interpreter. “As a pitcher, watching a play like that and having a defensive play like that behind you and not showing emotion would be something very weird.”
