When it comes to baseball, there is a special feeling as a batter to see the ball leave the yard. This usually means that the player was able to hit a home run and contribute to their team. In some cases, the ball never leaves the yard but the players still record a home run, thanks to their excellent running or poor fielding. On Monday, a similar instance was recorded as Kansas City Royals’ star Bobby Witt Jr hit an inside-the-park home run.

As the name gives away, an inside-the-park home run means the ball never for the bleachers and stayed inside the ground. In such a scenario, usually, the player hits the ball which then hits a wall then rolls away from the fielders. It is a little different from a little-league home run as it involves two or more fielding errors. Witt Jr showcased his incredible speed as he dashed across the bases.

The incident was recorded in the fifth inning. Witt Jr who was 2-2 on the night, slammed his shot in the right field. The fielder was unable to make the play which saw the ball roll all the way back to the wall. This allowed the Royals star to take off.

By the time the thrown was relayed back to the catcher, Witt Jr had successfully slid across the home plate. It took him mere 14.3 seconds to round off the bases and score as the team extended their lead to 4-0. This turned out to be crucial in the game. It was also the fastest time recorded in MLB since 2017.

After the inside-the-park home run by Bobby Witt Jr, very few would have predicted what was in store next. The Royals would extend their lead to 5-0 but soon found the Seattle Mariners mounting a comeback. The Mariners came back to take a 6-5 lead as Julio Rodriguez drove in a single.

This seemed to the end of the Royals who are having another poor season. However, they stunned everyone as they recorded a walk-off win. It was not just some normal hit or home run to walk it off. The team recorded the win through a sacrifice bunt to catch the Mariners off guard and win.

Outfielder Dairon Blanco’s decision to go for the bunt surprised everyone. He though after the game mentioned that he had prepared himself for such a situation. “I had the instinct that if we had first and third with less than two outs, I was going to bunt,” Blanco explained it in his post-match conference.

This win helped the Royals to improve their record to 39-81. While they might be facing another troublesome season, moments like this surely brought smiles across their fanbase as they proved that the underdogs can bite back.
