“He was my hero”: Captain John J Sax, son of LA Dodgers’ Steve Sax died in training flight crash

This past week, The U.S. Navy announced a ‘safety pause’ notifying Steve Sax of the heart-breaking reportage of his son ‘Captain John J Sax’ dying in a training flight crash. Steve Sax was disturbed by the following news and announced, “It is with complete devastation that I announce that my precious son Johnny was one of the five US Marines that perished on Wednesday, June 8, in the Osprey Military crash near San Diego,”

Sax said his son, desired to be a pilot from a very young age. 33 years old Captain John J. Sax was one of five Marines who could not make it when their Osprey tiltrotor aircraft went down during a training exercise roughly 20 miles northeast of the city of Holtville, California.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of five Marines from the Purple Fox family. Our primary mission now is taking care of the family members of our fallen Marines and we respectfully request privacy for their families as they navigate this difficult time.” said the squadron’s commanding officer, Lt. Col. John C. as reported by ABC7 Los Angeles.

Steve Sax played in Major League Baseball from 1981 to 1994. The second baseman had a career batting average of .281. He was a part of the Los Angeles Dodgers when they won the World Series in 1981 and 1988. Steve Sax has also played for the New York Yankees, the Chicago White Sox, and the Oakland Athletics.

He shared a few sorrowful words after getting the news, “For those of you that knew Johnny, you saw his huge smile, bright light, his love for his family, the Marines, the joy of flying aeroplanes and defending our country!

“He was my hero and the best man I know, there was no better person to defend our country.” Steve Sax continued, “There was never any doubt from a young age that Johnny would be a pilot and his passion was to fly! I am so proud of the man he became and so proud to call him my son! This loss will change my life forever and is a loss to not only the Marines but this world!”
