On Tuesday, when Carlos Correa was presented to the crowd at Minute Maid Park, he received the kind of thunderous standing ovation you’d anticipate from a hometown hero. As per usual, Carlos Correa cherished the moment, smiled broadly, and joined the crowd in watching a video tribute on the big screen that featured some of his favorite moments from his time playing for the Astros. “It feels great to be back, see the guys again,” Carlos Correa said earlier in the afternoon. “It’s a place I played so many games in my career, so many meaningful games. I just feel right, feels great.”

Since deciding to sign with the Twins in the winter and leaving the Astros after 6 1/2 spectacular seasons, Carlos Correa made his first journey back to Minute Maid Park. The shortstop had a 1-for-4 performance in the Twins’ 4-2 loss on Tuesday, breaking up Justin Verlander’s no-hitter with a single in the seventh inning. After being selected No. 1 overall by the Astros in the 2012 MLB Draft, Correa developed into a star and a beloved member of the team. He helped the Astros win six playoff series, including three AL pennants and the 2017 World Series.

“I was definitely looking forward to it,” Correa said. “I have a great relationship with the guys in the clubhouse here in Houston, and that’s never going to change because I play for another team. I talked to them pretty much every day, we text a lot. We talk [about] hitting, we talk about the game, we talk about our families all the time. The relationship we built goes way past the baseball field. I was looking forward to seeing all of them.”

Carlos Correa was presented with his 2021 American League championship ring by Astros manager Dusty Baker and pitcher Lance McCullers Jr., who was his closest teammate, following the showing of the tribute film. Both players were chosen in the 2012 amateur draught, and they progressed through the Minor League system together, making their Major League Baseball debuts in 2015.

“I’m actually happy I don’t have to face him,” Correa said of McCullers. “There will be a lot of mixed emotions. He’s my best friend and my son’s godfather. Our relationship goes way back to 2012. We both got drafted and played every Minor League game together.”

Astros pitcher Justin Verlander took some time to stand several feet behind the mound when Correa was up to bat in the first inning so he could take in the cheers of the crowd. As his old Astros teammates applauded on the field and in the dugout, Correa tipped his helmet. He quickly embraced fellow Puerto Rican catcher Martin Maldonado.
