“There’s no where else like London”- Chase Utley to work as MLB ambassador in Europe
Chase Utley
Chase Utley, a Phillies star, is well-known for his prowess in baseball, but the next phase of his career will take place overseas. The former second baseman says his new goal is to expand baseball in the UK and the rest of Europe, which is why he’s relocating to London. “I’m going to work for Major League Baseball as their ambassador,” Chase Utley told People.
In 2020, there were approximately 22,500 baseball players in the United Kingdom. The figure increased in 2019 when the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox played their first two games in the country. Each event drew nearly 60,000 people. The pandemic dampened that momentum, but the MLB’s plans in the UK are now back on track. In May, the league announced a partnership with London that will see regular season games, as well as other baseball-related events, played in the city in 2023, 2024, and 2026.

Chase Utley as baseball ambassador; baseball’s emergence in England
Baseball and football are uniquely American pastimes today, but their origins can be traced back to historic English sporting traditions. Although modern baseball did not emerge until the run-up to the Civil War, the name was first recorded in England in 1744, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
There is evidence that the game had already reached the colonies by 1735. Baseball and cricket, two other bat-and-ball sports popular in the United Kingdom and the British Commonwealth, can be traced back to the same group of games played across Western Europe during the colonial era.
