Winning is a good habit. Winning consecutive games is even better. On Sunday, the Chicago Cubs defeated their rival St Louis Cardinals 5-1. This victory was their eighth successive win. It also matched their longest winning streak since 2016, the year in which they went all the way to win the World Series.

The start of the second half has been pretty impressive for the Cubs. The National League Central side were languishing near the bottom of the table at the All-Star break. They have now won eleven of their last 15 games. The team has improved its overall record and has taken its win percentage above .500 with a 53-51 record.

The Cubs have won three of the series games against the Cardinals and would be hoping for a four-game sweep. If they manage to do it on Sunday, it will improve their chances of getting some players before the transfer deadline comes up. The confidence is high in the Cubs’ backroom as they look to mount a serious postseason rush.

It does feel like everyone’s contributing. Starters keeping us in games, bullpen locking it down, defense playing great, the lineup seems really long right now. I wouldn’t want to face us,” Cubs starting pitcher James Taillon said. He is now 5-6 this season following this latest outing. He pitched six innings, giving up two hits and one run, and managed to pick up four strikeouts.

Twitter reacts as Cubs continue to ride high on momentum

The year 2016 holds a special place in the hearts of the Chicago Cubs and their fans. That year they surprised everyone by making their way forward to the latter stages of the competition. The Cubs later found themselves 3-1 down in the World Series against the Cleveland Indians (Guardians). The team rallied back and won the next three games to end a 108-year drought for the World Series.

While they might not be able to replicate that success this year, they can still land a solid punch. This win against the Cardinals marked their biggest win streak since 2016. That year they amazed eleven wins between July and August. A victory on Sunday would take that figure to nine wins on the bounce as the team gears up to sweep the Cardinals. Here are a few reactions regarding their longest win streak in the last seven years.

The Cubs are now 3.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in first place. They might have to work hard like this to catch them but momentum is thoroughly on their side and they are riding high on it. They are also three games back in the National League wildcard race. With the emergence of the Cincinnati Reds, Brewers, and now the Cubs, the NL Central could turn into a three-horse race.
