Dallas Keuchel, a left-handed pitcher, has been designated for assignment, the Rangers said. Dallas Keuchel’s place on the active roster was taken by left-handed pitcher John King, who was called up from Triple-A.

Late in July, Keuchel signed a minor league contract, and on August 27 his contract was formally added to the major league roster. Unfortunately for Keuchel, his two outings in a Texas uniform were complete failures as he surrendered seven runs in each start and finished his 10 innings as a Ranger with an ERA of 12.60.

The 34-year-old pitcher, who has a collective 9.20 ERA across 60 2/3 innings with the Rangers, Diamondbacks, and White Sox, has had a difficult season overall. Keuchel failed to a point that he was released in late May after starting the season in Chicago, and the Red Sox took on the roughly $13MM that was left on his three-year, $55.5MM contract.

It’s been a tough season for Dallas Keuchel

Therefore, during his brief stint on the active rosters of the D’Backs and Rangers, Keuchel only required payment of the prorated fraction of a Major League minimum salary; the White Sox took care of the remainder of the tab. The two teams took a low-risk gamble to see if Keuchel would benefit from a change of environment, but the seasoned player faltered at each visit.

Keuchel’s ground-heavy, low-strikeout style has long been a subject of debate, but the left-hander was nonetheless a front-of-the-rotation pitcher in 2020 when he placed sixth in the vote for the AL Cy Young Award in his first season with the White Sox.

However, Keuchel’s stats began to significantly deteriorate in 2021 as he began to let much more hard contact and his walk rate decreased. In 2022, those issues have only gotten worse, with Keuchel’s 10.2% walk rate ranking in the worst 20% of all pitchers.
