Washington Nationals general manager Dave Martinez got into a steamy argument with home plate umpire Doug Eddings during the game against the Diamondbacks. Nationals star Jake Irvin threw what should’ve been a strike but wasn’t called so by the umpire which angered Martinez.
After some discussion in the dugout, the GM came onto the field and started arguing with Eddings. Since the Nationals Park Stadium wasn’t packed to its maximum capacity, the conversation between the two was quite audible.
After being ejected by Eddings, Dave Martinez lay down on the ground and started to explain to the umpire how low the ball actually was and a clear strike. No matter how much Martinez screamed or tried to make the umpire see his mistake, he wasn’t successful.
In the end, the Nationals lost the game 5-3 to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Washington has now managed to win only three of their last 17 games and are the worst team in National League with a 28-46 record.

Nationals players proud to see Dave Martinez fighting for them

Nationals pitcher Jake Irvin whose delivery caused so much trouble during the fifth innings was extremely proud of his skipper. After the game, Irvin said that it was motivational to see Dave Martinez run to the field and go toe to toe with the umpire to get him to reverse his decision. This boosts the morale in the locker room and shows the players that there is a guy who supports them no matter what and cares for them and their hard work.
“I wasn’t the one screaming in the dugout,” Martinez said via MLB.com. “It was loud. You could hear everything. We are in a crucial situation right then. The call was bad. Nothing against the umpires, but I am going to protect my players, and that’s all there is to it. He takes a pitch. He does a good job. Maybe he gets to the next pitch, who knows. Maybe he gets a base hit and we are back in the ball game. It’s just a tough situation.”
Fans on the other hand were blown away by seeing Dave Martinez get into it with the umpire. Martinez’s ejection led to some crazy reactions from baseball fans. Here are a few of them.
This is the second controversial call made by umpires in the last three days. Texas Rangers catcher Jonah Heim was penalized by the umpire for blocking the home plate which led to the team losing the game to the White Sox 7-6. The league has a ton of technology that can be used to review such controversial plays because even a small blunder by the officials this far into the season can cause the team to lose a place in the playoffs.
