“Just didn’t work out”: Dave Roberts blunders as Los Angeles Dodgers couldn’t get to the win

A decision by Manager Dave Roberts in the 7th inning may have lost Los Angeles Dodgers the game and their season-high 7-game winning streak. They were all ready to hold on through for a comeback falling behind early only to put up runs late. The Dodgers were in a perfect position to make another comeback win.

The Dodgers got things going against St. Louis Cardinals reliever Junior Fernandez when the game was heading into the 7th inning, Dave Roberts’ team was trailing by 2 runs. Trea Turner reached on catcher’s interference, Freddie Freeman took an amazing single, and Will Smith dashed in on a run with a single of his own.

But then the inevitable happened, Justin Turner drew the walk and loaded the bases, setting the stage for what could’ve been a great comeback. The Dodgers fans were deeply disappointed with what could have been their 8th straight win.

The comeback couldn’t happen as Dave Roberts opted to go with Max Muncy over Trayce Thompson all for going against the righty, St Louis Cardinals countered with a call to the bullpen for a left-handed pitcher to face Muncy. Muncy was unable to capitalize on the moment and flew out to short-center. Both Hanser Alberto and Cody Bellinger were then not able to get the job done either and left the game-winning runners on base.

“I think we got a great situation. I loved where we were at. It just didn’t work out.” said Dave Roberts. “It’s a one-day thing,” Roberts said. “Tomorrow we’ve got Dakota Hudson. Max will be back in the six. But again, this is a performance-based business.”

He added, “Obviously, I have a longer leash with guys – at times. We’re going to keep monitoring it. I still feel that in the past week, the swings that he’s getting off have been better swings. I know we’re trending in the right direction.”

Blake Harris tweeted, “Dave Roberts pulling a .300 hitter in the 8th inning for a guy with a wRC+ of 59 just so he could bring in the go-ahead run an inning later is just next level managing.”
