It has finally happened. After 11 long years of wait, the Major League Baseball (MLB) finally has another perfect game. New York Yankees Domingo German joined an exclusive list of names to throw a perfect game since Felix Hernandez did so in 2012. German accomplished this extraordinary feat against the Oakland Athletics.
After losing the first game of the series to the A’s, the fans of the Yankees brutally slammed their team. The A’s, one of the worst teams this year, took the first game. The Yankees bounced back in emphatic style with the charge led by German. He is now the 24th pitcher in AL/NL to achieve this rare feat.
As the name suggests, a pitcher is said to have thrown a perfect game when they do not allow a single hit through the whole nine innings. It is slightly different than a no-hitter. In a no-hitter, a pitcher can throw no hits but could give up some walks. A perfect game means that the southpaw has not made a single mistake throughout the game.
In his perfect game, German managed to pick up nine strikeouts. He had been the center of attention lately following two substance checks, one of which led to a 10-game suspension. An emotional German later dedicated this performance to one of his uncles, who recently passed away. “To accomplish something like this is something I’m going to remember forever,” he told the media after the game.
Twitter reacts as Domingo German makes history
Domingo German has made a name for himself this season. The pitcher has been one of the shining points of the Yankees’ disappointing season so far. He is now the fourth Yankee player and the first since David Cone, to throw a perfect game. Cone accomplished this feat nearly 24 years ago in July 1999.
The NY side has not had a season to remember so far. Their tactics and strategies by manager Aaron Boone have been questioned from time to time. However, this German performance followed an 11-0 win over the Athletics. Though some might say it’s against the A’s, it is still one of the hardest things to complete in baseball. Here are some reactions regarding this huge moment.
This feat by German is also the first no-hitter of the season. While many have celebrated this outcome, some have hit back at German following his private life matters. It’s a complete topic though. Tonight the Yankees and their fans will be celebrating hard. They though will have to be careful as there is another game coming up against the Athletics. They would surely be disappointed if they lose the series after this historic performance.
