“Absurd; truly embarrassing”: Eccentric drama as New York Mets broadcasters comment on rule controversy
Mets and Dodgers
The Broadcasting crew of the New York Mets were found agonizing and went bananas after the umpires of the match show a rather unconventional attitude towards not knowing a rule that they were themselves trying to enforce. The New York Mets Broadcasting crew are considered to be one of the most exemplary baseball presenting teams.
The bizarre incident took place in the ninth innings of the match between the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Inevitably, the Mets went on to win the game 9-4.
When the Dodgers were down by 5, their manager Dave Roberts did not want to put forth heavy strain on his regular bullpen pitchers as he felt the game has already gone out of their hands. He tried to put the ball into the hands of his versatile player – Zach McKinstry – only then was it mentioned that a new rule dictates a position player cannot come into the pitch unless they are down by more than six runs.
Clouds of confusion engulf as a bizarre new rule starts a war of words
No one on the field had a clue about the delay in the discussions. The umpires went for a lengthy discussion with the Major League Baseball’s replay centre in New York. There was some confusion about the ruling.
The New York Mets broadcaster Keith Hernandez couldn’t take it after several minutes and said, “Look at this, this is absurd!”
After a couple of moments, the crew chief C.B Bucknor went on to the sides to announce the ruling and give some clarity. He was then seen to be extensively confused about what he should be saying.
“We … by …” Bucknor hesitated and scratched his chin and took a long pause.
Eventually, he finished his thought.
“By rule, a position player cannot come into pitch unless they are down by more than six runs,” Bucknor said.
After hearing the ruling, the New York Mets fans poured the stadium with boos, Captain Buck Showalter blasted out of the dugout to argue, as the umpires allowed Evan Phillips, the new replacement inordinate amount of time to practice before pitching.

“Come on!” Hernandez said. “Make a Custer decision here!”
