The New York Mets defeated the major league-best Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 on Thursday after Edwin Diaz escaped a jam in the eighth inning by striking out Gavin Lux on a fastball travelling at 102.8 mph. After the Mets were held to one hit in five innings by Clayton Kershaw, making his first start since August 4, Francisco Lindor hit a tying double in the sixth and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Darin Ruf.

The NL East’s top team, New York, defeated Los Angeles two out of three games for their first series victory over the Dodgers since September 3-5, 2011. LA suffered its first back-to-back defeats since July 25–26. At Citi Field, the Dodgers last lost two straight games on consecutive days on July 25–26, 2015, which was precisely seven years ago. “They got a really good team,” Edwin Diaz said. “We showed them we have a really good team, too. That’s the team we might play in the playoffs.”

Chris Bassitt (12-7) won for the fifth time in a row, matching his win total from the previous campaign with Oakland. He gave up two runs and six hits in six innings. After the Mets established a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning, he left the game. When Daz struck out Will Smith and walked Freddie Freeman to start the eighth inning, New York had a 5-2 lead. Max Muncy’s flyball down the warning track moved Freeman up to third, and a Justin Turner flyball near the centre field 408-foot sign sent him home.

“I was a little bit angry because I wasn’t commanding my slider the way I want to,” Diaz said.
