MLB Fan
A horrific scene took place in the Bronx in the early 2000s, An MLB Fan named Harper jumped off the upper deck of the Old Yankees Stadium to land on the netting hung tight above the lower deck.
The chap fell 40-feet over the large screen during the 8th inning of the game between New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox.
The MLB fan was taken to the hospital after the final out, carried on a stretcher from the ballpark to Lincoln Medical Center, his head immobilized in a neck brace.
He was released only to be put into custody and arraigned in Bronx Criminal Court on charges of trespassing, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, and other violations.
“The next thing you know, you don’t see him anymore. You saw him on the net,” said 18-year-old MLB Fan Mike, one of Harper’s friends.
“People think we threw him off, but we’re all best friends, so I don’t think that would ever happen,” said 20-year-old MLB Fan Giusseppe, another one of Harper’s friends.
Both New York and the Chicago White Sox fan were shocked to see the Young MLB fan’s attempt
“I’ve never seen anything like that before,” White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. “I think that’s New York, you know, anything can happen.” On the other hand, “I was hoping I wouldn’t see that again,” Yankees manager Joe Torre said. “You could break your neck.”
The MLB fan was indeed rumored to have had a conversation with his friends that he wanted to jump to see how much weight the nets could hold. This was the second time the Yankee stadium witnessed an MLB fan falling from the upper deck.
In May 2000, 24-year-old Stephen Laurenzi of Yonkers, N.Y., was unconscious for a short time while sprawled on the net as a game between Boston and New York went on. He also was arrested and taken to a hospital for observation.
