The MLB City Connect was introduced in 2021 as a collaboration between Nike Inc. and the league. Through this initiative, the teams bring out alternate uniforms which feature jerseys with different color schemes, fonts, and graphical elements than their usual ones. Out of the 30 franchises in MLB, 20 of them have signed up to bring out new and alternate concepts to their jerseys.
As of 2023, Texas Rangers are one of the first teams to release their MLB City Connect jersey. Upon the release of their jersey, the team described it saying, “[the jersey] celebrates the origin story of the Rangers and the Texas spirit that brought Dallas and Fort Worth together in Arlington. Through baseball.”
The new uniform presents a unique look, with gothic-style lettering influenced by the Dallas Eagles and a spur which is a tribute to the Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs. The right sleeve of the jersey features a Peagle, which is a mythical creature inspired by blending the mascots from two Texas league teams- the Dallas Eagles and the Fort Worth Panthers.
The jersey also pays tribute to Tom Vandergriff, who was the pioneer of bringing Major League Baseball to North Texas. The words “Dream the Big Dream” appears at the bottom of the jersey, on the jock tag. However, it might not be visible if players tuck their jerseys into their pants.

Fans are not at all pleased with the new City Connect design of Texas Rangers’ jerseys
While all efforts towards designing the jersey might have been noble, the fans are not at all pleased with the new design presented this year. They have expressed their views on Twitter and many are calling this year’s design close to horrendous.
Besides the mentioned features, the jersey kit also contains black caps as part of the uniform. These black caps have the letters TR written in a gothic style on the face, and the 4-star 21 on the side. The number represents several important dates in Texas’ history and baseball culture.
The fans on Twitter are complaining that they could not find any relevance to the actual Texas Rangers, Texas Independence, and Dallas in the jersey. Many fans have also compared this to the popular game Roblox while some have compared this to softball uniforms. In general, the response to the Rangers’ new jerseys is not as good as they would have expected them to be.
The Texas Rangers are one of the six teams to feature in the 2023 City Connect program. They will be wearing the new jerseys during 13 Friday home games this season, and on Saturday, April 22.
