A factor that makes baseball entertaining to watch, apart from its home runs, is stealing bases. A player is said to have stolen a base when they reach from one base to another without the pitchers catching them out. The rate of stolen bases has increased this year thanks to the new rules. On Wednesday, Padres superstar Fernando Tatis Jr. did something special as he stole the home plate.

Stealing first, second and third bases are considered to be a little easier than stealing home. For obvious reasons, the player has to reach the home plate while the pitcher prepares to face the batter. However, the way Tatis stole home only made the pitcher Cionel Perez look worse as they strolled towards home plate.

The incident occurred in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the Padres leading 4-2, Tatis was stationed at third base. As Juan Soto walked up to bat, Tatis made full use of the new base shift rules and took off. Fans are now questioning the pitcher as he just stood there, way too late to react and make a throw to the catcher.

Before this, Tatis had already stolen second base and reached the third one through a throwing error by Perez. This turned out to be his 22nd stolen base of the year as Tatis continues to be the danger man of the San Diego Padres.

At the start of the season, the MLB introduced certain rules, including larger bases and shifts on fielding. This has led to the players taking full advantage of the new rules as the number of stolen bases has increased this season. The action of Fernando Tatis Jr. in the seventh inning would electrify the crowd at Petco Park.

However, some fans were not impressed by his actions. They would call him out for his usage of Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs). Tatis was found to be using foreign substances which led to him being suspended for several games. Ever since his return, the away crowds have given him a hard time like the Cubs one did. One user wrote “using his PEDs to run faster,” while several others joined him to slam Tatis. Check out a few reactions.

This steal by Tatis was the last scoring action of the game as the Padres won 5-2. They also took the series by winning two games against the surprise package in the form of the Orioles. While the Padres did have a great outing, they are still five games behind .500 win percentage and 16 games behind the LA Dodgers in the race for the division.
